Dressed in a wrapper, Rachel rested the side of her head against the bedchamber window pane as she absentmindedly stared out. Other than taking her meals in the dining room, she had not ventured out of her chamber for the past two days. Due to her impulsiveness, John was beaten and almost murdered in an alleyway. Thank goodness that David had seen John being dragged into the alley, or else…

Shuddering, Rachel couldn’t continue thinking about what happened. Tightening her wrapper around her, a lone tear dropped from her eye and rolled down her cheek. She was aware her spontaneity wasn’t always well received, but never had someone else suffered so cruelly because of her actions. If only she had listened to John and David rather than antagonizing Lord Melville. Even though Lord Melville was a despicable rogue, she had naïvely believed he was not a horse thief or a murderer.

“If only I had listened,” she mumbled to herself.

The worst part was that she had lost John’s friendship. After Rachel rode off, she had hoped that John would race after her or throw rocks at her windows, intentionally seeking her out and providing her with much-needed comfort. But that had not happened. He had every right to hate her, although it broke her heart to admit that.

The door opened, and Savannah walked in with a blossom-colored dress draped over her arm. Laying the dress on the bed, she opened the window, allowing a breeze to cool the room. Smiling a little too cheerfully, she announced, “Your aunt and uncle have requested that you join them in the drawing room.”

“No, thank you,” Rachel responded. “Please inform them that I have a headache.”

Not deterred by her lack of enthusiasm, Savannah replied, “Your aunt anticipated you might say that and informed me that you have twenty minutes, or they will join you in your bedchamber.”

Not bothering to lift her head off the window, Rachel decided to ignore her lady’s maid, who was walking around the room, preparing for the day. After Savannah pulled out the chair at her dressing table, she patted the top, inviting Rachel to sit down. Shaking her head, Rachel admitted, “I don’t want to leave my room.”

Sighing, Savannah brought a chair closer to her and sat down. “For two days, you have done nothing but stare out that window.” Leaning forward, she asked softly, “What happened to make you so melancholy?”

Finally, lifting her head, Rachel murmured, “I did something horrible.”

“Which was?” Savannah prodded.

Rachel’s mouth opened, but she couldn’t seem to find the words to share how she’d killed a man. Instead, she lowered her gaze and chose to ignore Savannah’s worried gaze.

Savannah leaned back and jested, “Well, that was informative.” Walking over to the dressing table, she retrieved a brush and brought it back. Savannah unbraided her hair and started brushing.

Like a whirlwind, Savannah brushed and pinned her hair back into a low chignon, grabbed the dress from the bed, and helped her into it. Urging her towards the door, Savannah continued to fasten the buttons on the back of her dress as she walked.
